  Design Competition and Portfolio Review
For the 2011 Tennessee Theatre Association Conference

The Tennessee Theatre Association is pleased to present the Design Competition and Portfolio Review. Come join us for this exciting new addition to the fall conference!

The Design Competition is a chance to showcase your school's design/tech program. We want to see what you are working on! Both realized shows and non-realized class projects are eligible for entry. Eligibility is limited to full time undergraduates at current TTA member universities, but Spring graduates can still present at the following fall conference. Entries are limited to one per student per category (scene design, lighting design, costume design). Competitors must be sponsored by a university faculty member by way of letter.

Registration must be completed by October 5th, 2011. The competition fee is $25 (which also includes conference registration). Up to three entries (one per category) may be included in this $25 fee. Application forms and additional information will be available on the TTA website soon.

The design competition will be held on the Saturday of the fall conference. Designers will be allowed an hour to set up their presentation. Projects will be allowed a 3'x4' space (tables will be provided). All materials (with the exception of dress forms) must fit inside this space. Dress forms must stand alone and fit in front of the allotted space (designer must provide the dress form). Presentation boards must stand alone and fit on the table with no auxiliary support. We would recommend a tri-fold board. No power will be available for competitor use, but applicants are encouraged to bring a laptop if it is appropriate to their work. At time of judging, each designer will be allowed a 5 minutes verbal presentation before the adjudicators, followed by a short question and answer session. The adjudication process will be open to all students' participation as a learning opportunity and a chance to hear what theatre professionals have to say about design.

Each project must include the following:

  • Design statement (one page)
  • A design process binder showing script analysis, visual research, sketches to show the evolution of design, plots/sectionals/renderings/ground plans/painters elevations (as appropriate), final project self-evaluation (no more than one page) Presentation board should include a short design statement, appropriate drawings and renderings, research collage, fabric swatches/gel swatches/ paint elevations as appropriate, photos of realized work
  • Scenic models that fit within the allotted space are encouraged.
  • Costume pieces that fit within the allotted space are encouraged.
  • Laptop presentations are allowed in addition to the presentation board. **There is no power available for laptops!!!!

All winners will be determined by the three guest adjudicators. There will be a single winner per category (for a total of three first place winners). One of these three first place winners will be chosen as the Grand Prize winner. Individual winners will receive first place awards and the Grand Prize winner will have their SETC registration paid for the following spring SETC conference.

Following the design competition will be a portfolio review for the first ten applicants. Students do not have to enter the design competition to be eligible for the portfolio review. Be sure to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to have theatre professionals help you with your portfolio!

Applications for both the Design Competition and the Portfolio Review will be available soon.
